Protecting and Regenerating Mid-Canterbury’s Biodiverse Ecosystems

Join us in our mission to educate, collaborate, and transform our environment for a better, biodiverse future.

Our Trust’s Inspiring Journey

Kanuka Mid-Canterbury Regeneration Trust was founded to foster community awareness and action towards protecting our biodiversity, collaborating with local residents, schools, and organizations for a sustainable future. Learning about biodiversity and why it is important
Our objective/driving force is to encourage a sense of stewardship over the local environment.

We us a placed-based education approach where the local community and environment is a starting point to teach concepts in language arts, math, social sciences and other subjects.

By facilitating collaborative learning opportunities and championing place-based projects, we can better engage with children and young people as they look to make a meaningful contribution to the region they will inherit.

Some great learning about the history of our NZ natives and how they were used with Fairton School last week. Then, we explored them hands on and got creative! Building our own scenes while exploring the textures of the plants and describing them to each other -hands on is always the best way to learn 🙌 See MoreSee Less

It was great to be part of this hands on, out in the community learning opportunity recently. Members from the ADC Biodiversity Action Group (ADBAG) visited sites around the district together. Discussing important factors in future biodiversity projects and networking together for future projects. How cool is this 🧐Not an alien — just a Mahoenui Giant Wētā mid wardrobe change 👀🦗This is a Mahoenui Giant Wētā mid-moult — frozen in time as it sheds its old exoskeleton to grow. It’s a vulnerable, transformative moment that looks more sci-fi than insect.Wētā go through multiple moults (instar) in their lifetime, each one helping them grow a little larger until they reach adulthood. During this time, they’re soft, pale, and completely exposed — which is why we keep a careful eye on our juveniles behind the scenes. These ancient giants have been around since the age of dinosaurs. So while it might look like a visitor from outer space, you're actually looking at one of New Zealand’s rarest and most precious natives — right in the middle of a costume change. 🦗✨ See MoreSee Less
